Sailing between islands
Your first island hop happens around level 30, and the game does not require a ship for it — but buying one from Mary in Maple Village changes how quickly you can reach world boss spawns and double back for missed quest chains. Do not buy a ship before you have a weapon and a style; mobility is a luxury until combat is settled.
